The Bates Method

The Bates Method is a system of visual re-education that aids people who have poor sight relearn the habits of good sight. Developed by Dr. William Bates in the 1900s, the Bates Method is made up of eye exercises that are simple and effective to do.

Dr. Bates found out that the key to most visual problems was due to incorrect use of the visual system. He observed and studied the practices of normally sighted people and the attributes of normal sight and created ways to aid people with aberrant sight to relearn how to use their eyes naturally.

Performing Bates Eye Exercises

When done correctly, these eye exercises can really work. Here are some eye exercises in the Bates Method that you can use as vision correction methods:

Sunning
This is a kind of exercise that is supposedly done with natural sunlight. But you can also utilize a lamp that has a 60-100 watt bulb. Use this lamp and sit it on a table in front of you. Position the light to point at your face while your eyes are closed. If you think it’s too bright, you can always push it back a bit until the light is tolerable.

Then picture yourself gazing off into the horizon as you turn your head from side to side. Each turn you make should take about 3 seconds while continuing your gaze until you have stopped doing the exercise. Do the exercise for about 3 to 4 minutes. Make sure not to exceed more than the recommended duration as it may damage your eyes.

Long Swing
This exercise is made to relax your eyes. To do this exercise, get a long stick that will serve as your pointer during this exercise. While standing with your feet at shoulder length, hold the pointer in front of you with both hands.

From that position, gently move from side to side while lifting your heel up off the floor. Turn your upper body in a manner that your head and shoulders are moving in the similar direction as you do when you move from side to the other. Look at the tip of the pointer while it is still in front of you and as you move from side to side. Make sure to maintain the pointer at eye level.

Do this by choosing a color of an object to focus on as you go through your day. The idea is not to focus on the object’s shape or form. Instead focus on the color. Each day choose a new color to focus on. This simple eye exercise will help improve vision.   .
