What is astigmatism?
Astigmatism is a common eye condition that affects vision. This visual impairment is a result of an imperfection in the curve of the front surface of the eye (cornea). The curve is irregular in form and usually one half is flatter than the other or one area is steeper than it should normally be.
But while doctors recommend medical treatments such as glasses and laser surgery, you can improve your vision by performing eye exercises for astigmatism. It may not replace medical treatment but it helps relax your eyes and helps improve your focusing ability in a natural way.
Guidelines On Performing

- Perform eye exercises during the day when your eyes feel relaxed
Types of Eye Exercises
Through performing yoga exercises for the eyes, you are able to strengthen eye muscles, sharpen focus and enhance vision and astigmatism symptoms. Start with a straight posture. You can choose to stand, sit on a chair or sit on the floor with legs crossed. Then while your eyes are closed, breathe and meditate on feeling and becoming aware of your eyes. That is when you start moving your eyeballs from side to side slowly. Perform this exercise several times and remember to continually breathe throughout your exercises.
In order to promote better vision and relieve pressure and strain from your eyes, it’s important to perform relaxation exercises. It’s also because your eyes necessitate rest and relaxation for proper functioning. Palming is one relaxation exercise that you can do. Simply do this by closing your eyes and covering them with your hands. Make sure that you don’t touch your eyes by cupping your hand and resting your finger tips on your forehead. You should only see blackness and no light. Stare into the darkness for at least 3 to 10 minutes. Also, enforce eye relaxation by looking away from the computer every 20 minutes for 30 to 60 seconds and blinking frequently.
Taking regular visual focusing breaks are very important. From time to time, take a break from activities like reading, writing and staring at the computer as this is the best way to relieve eye pressure for any sort of vision strain problem, including astigmatism. You can do this by focusing on other objects in the distance for at least 20 seconds at a time.
With this exercise, you’ll have to ask a friend or look in the mirror to find out whether you tend to tilt your head more often than you should. If you do, spend time every day tilting it in the opposite side for two or three months. Tilting the head in the opposite direction helps the extraocular muscles to adjust the force they put forth on the eyeball. It should counterbalance the astigmatism. To help you remember to tilt your head the other way, set up a reminder system at home or at the office such as using cue cards.
Performing neck stretching exercises daily is known to help relieve astigmatism. With an upright posture, deliberately move your head from side to side and back and forth several times each day. And while you are doing the exercise routine, turn your head and glance over each shoulder a few times and add head circling in both directions toward the end of the routine. This neck exercise will increase circulation which provides more nourishment to the eyes.
